Special K, what was I thinking?
RSS FeedSpecial K, what was I thinking?
I don’t know what possessed me to purchase the Special K Vanilla Almond cereal on my latest trip to the grocery. I guess even I have fallen prey to their rather annoying adds! Usually I am a health cereal nut! Organic granola and muesli with lots of heart and brain healthy stuff, but for some unknown reason the Special K found its way into my cart and made it home with me.
So, the next morning I had my first bowl and right away the sugary sweetness rang some alarm bells. I then turned over the box and looked at the nutrition info on this supposedly “nutritious” cereal. Again, I have no idea why I didn’t do this in the first place. Throughout my own process of maintaining a healthy body I have learned that education is all powerful and that handy nutrition label is an essential tool. I almost never put stuff into my cart, especially cereal, without looking at that little panel. I’m telling you, had I followed my usual routine that box never would have gotten home with me!
1 GRAM, 1 measly little gram of fiber and only 2 grams of protein!!! It is no wonder at all that within 45 minutes I found myself ravenously searching my fridge for something else to eat! How can anyone stay satiated for more than a millisecond with only 1 gram of fiber!
To put this into perspective let’s take a look at the nutrition information for the popular chocolate treat Hershey’s Kiss. This information is directly from the Hershey company website. You can have 9 pieces of lovely chocolate and get the same amount of fibre (1gram) and an extra gram of protein (3grams)!
Now of course I know that the chocolate has considerably more calories and fat and I am not suggesting that you begin chowing down on kisses for breakfast, but it is interesting food for thought. What I took away from this experience was a great reminder to be a diligent label reader so I know I am making the best, most nutritious choices for my body.
If you don’t really know what to look for on your labels or maybe you are thinking 1 gram of fiber sounds like plenty, it is high time you educated yourself!
If you already know but consistently choose to ignore your education, you need to figure out what is going on for you emotionally that is contributing to unhealthy habits.
From years of experience I know that maintaining a healthy body weight is all about using my head to make the choices that support my goals.
The choices you make today will decide your future. What do you want that future to look like?

A Normal Woman?
Yes I am publicly admitting that I have cellulite! Gasp!!! According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery 95% of women have cellulite. That is more than 45 million people with this much dreaded and covered up physical issue.
Wow, so I guess I’m not some weird freak of nature after all!
It does raise the question, if that many people have the dimply skin why do we consider it such a shameful thing?
Where does this shameful obsession come from? I mean, if we cellulite bearers are in such a great majority shouldn’t we see scandalous tabloid photos of the stars who DON’T have cellulite?
I might suggest that this is yet another example of how we allow ourselves to be manipulated by advertising. Forty Five million women is a pretty good target audience, and it isn’t hard to make them feel so desperately bad about themselves that they will try anything and pay anything to get rid of such a “horrible” affliction! This is BIG business. The cellulite treatment industry rakes in over 3 BILLION dollars a year by preying on your insecurities about your body!
It is exactly these insecurities that lead women to worry about their bodies an average of every 15 minutes. That is a lot of time and energy out of your day. If that is not scary enough for you, 47% of little girls between 5 and 7 years wish they were slimmer! Who do you think they are learning this from? Self depreciating thoughts about our image, affect everything we do in life and undermine our success in every area. It is not just about your body.
Make it stop.
One person at a time, each of us has the power to choose a different life for ourselves and for our daughters. This is the only body you will ever get. Start treating it with some respect!
Celebrate the miracle of your body for it is your vehicle in this life, without it where would you be?
If you want to free yourself from the chains of body obsessions, to respect this body, to live life more fully and joyfully you need to attend Saturday’s workshop.
SIGN UP NOW before you forget!
Don’t put it off until tomorrow because you might miss this chance to make a change in your life.

How to FEEL good naked
A good friend shared this story and I’d like to pass it on to you. It made me think about how we all treat our bodies. A word of caution, it does contain the word penis for anyone who is sensitive you may wish to stop reading now!
My friend’s 3 year old son approached her the other night complaining that his penis hurt. She sympathized with him as much as she could and told him it would stop soon. This was not quite good enough however and he demanded that she go, right now, to the store and buy him a new one!!!
If only it were that simple wouldn’t we all be a lot happier.
Unfortunately we only ever get one body. The body you have is the only one you will ever get, it is your vessel in this life and yet you wage such war against it. Isn’t it time to start respecting and honoring your body for the miracles it is? For all that it allows you to do?
Bathing suit season is fast approaching which usually sets the body war into over drive as most women criticize ever inch of their bodies and ponder the warm months ahead with great dread. How sad that negative body image is allowed to over shadow everything.
If this is you, instead of pleasurable anticipation of fun times spent at the park, beach or pool you feel anxiety. You torment yourself with negative thoughts and worries rather than allowing yourself to be free and have a good time.
Now relax, I’m not trying to sell you the latest weight loss miracle. I do want you to learn to feel better in the body you have now, to develop a better body image and self-esteem. I know it can be done as I did it myself and for years have been helping other women to overcome the same struggles.
Benefits of this workshop
- Stop hating your body - learn to accept and even "love" it!
- Control the judging self-torment
- Look in the mirror with more confidence
- Feel more comfortable and free in public
- Improve your intimate relationships
- Enjoy your summer for a change
Learning to love and respect your body does not mean you give up on improving your fitness and healthy weight loss goals, if you have them. You have been fighting against and trying to control your body for a long time. It is time to try something different. Try kindness and respect. Trying to change anything when you begin with negativity makes it almost impossible. Try positive thinking and see how it can change the way you feel and even the way you look!

Scrap the New Years Resolution
Try going into this New Year with a different approach and attitude. Instead of simply making a list of the things you want to change and then letting it all slide by the middle of the month take some time to sit down and really take stalk of this last year and what the year ahead could offer.
What did you accomplish this year? What are you proud of? What gifts did you receive this past year? (Remember to look for the gifts in disguise). What steps did you take toward accomplishing your last resolutions even if you did end up falling off the wagon? Did you learn anything from those steps or even falling off the wagon? Give yourself credit for those steps no matter how small and ask yourself how you can build on that this year.
Success is achieved through all the small steps we take to get there so don’t ever discount the small things you have done. With that idea in mind decide what you want to do differently this year. What are your “Intentions” for this year? What would you like it to look like? Be specific in your vision and imagination and then decide on a couple of small steps you can start taking now to get there. Lay out a SPECIFIC plan and even write it into your calendar. Break your larger goal down into it’s smaller components or steps and set about accomplishing those each week.
It might look like this.
Goal: Lose 20 pounds
Break it down: Start regular exercise program (doing little or nothing now)- Walk at lunch 3 x this week
Eat out less – Bring lunch to work 3 x this week
Eat green veggies 4 times this week
You get the idea. It looks silly but it makes your goals much more attainable. Each week look over what you have accomplished on your list and give yourself a big star for what you have done. Take note of where you fell short and ask yourself what went wrong but DO NOT get into beat yourself up mode. Each week you will build on your goals. Increasing your exercise or trying different food recipes etc.
Make sure your goals each week are realistic. If you haven’t done any exercise in 6 months don’t start out by setting the goal to work out for 1 hour 6 days right out of the gate. This will only set you up for disappointment and failure. Remember the turtle in the race with the rabbit? Slow and steady gets the job done much better than anything else!
What ever your goals are for this year you can accomplish them by taking the small steps first and acknowledging yourself for each one along the way. Good luck and have fun making your personal changes this coming year. Make it a fantastic one!

Tired of Feeling like a Failure at Weight Loss?
In this Issue:
- Are your goals sabotaging you? By Deborah Morgan
- Cold and Flu Season is Upon us. Are you Ready? By Dr. Rebecca Sagan ND
Goals from the past.
At a recent workshop one of the participants brought up her goal to get back to the weight she had been several years before and the confident, happy life that went with it. Another woman expressed a similar desire, to get back to a previous weight and happier times. I’m sure this sounds familiar to many. If you haven’t wished for a long lost body for yourself you have undoubtedly heard others doing just that. Setting goals based on the past is such a common approach yet it is really defeating us without our knowledge.
First of all you cannot go back. The only way we can move through life is forward, there is no rewind button! Yes, maybe it is true that you experienced those feelings once when you were........ That’s great, you know you are capable of feeling it but your life will never be exactly what it was then. Circumstances in life have changed, you have changed and trying to get “back” to anything is a waste of time and energy. Focus your attention on what you want in the here and now and take the past out of the picture. Focus on being fit, healthy and happy NOW rather than “getting back” to that.
The other problem with this approach is the covert negativity and this is the most powerful reason it tends to undermine us. By trying to recreate the past you are comparing it to your present reality and usually the present doesn’t measure up. Your goal may seem like a positive one to “get back” to a fitter, healthier and happier time. You remember how confident and happy you felt at that weight and want to feel that way again....that seems positive at first glance.
But, can you see the negativity lurking in the shadows?
When you look into the closet of cloths that used to fit in that wonderful past or you look at the goal picture of yourself what do you feel? Do you feel pumped up and excited about yourself or more often than not do you feel deflated and defeated? I’m willing to bet it probably makes you feel really badly about yourself as you are now? This seemingly positive goal is reminding you of everything you ARE NOT today and that is a very negative place to work from.
I’ve said it before; get rid of the closet full of old “skinny” cloths. Put the pictures back in the album or shoe box. Start FRESH from where you stand, who you are and where your life is at NOW. Be clear on why you want to release weight based on there here and now not on the past. Catch yourself comparing or using the past language and stop it, focus on moving forward and creating the new you rather than the old.
Waiting List
The next Silver and Gold packages for the Mind over Matter- Mastering your weight program will begin in January and there is a waiting list to join.

This will be the perfect program to make sure that New Years Resolution doesn't make it onto the list again next year!
Cold and Flu Season is Upon us. Are you Ready?

Why do we get colds and flu?
Generally this occurs because our bodies are trying to get rid of pathogens. Colds and flu are the body’s way of eliminating mucous and these illnesses are usually preceded by a period of excessive eating or poor eating habits, lack of rest, overwork, worry or temperature changes during the fall and spring. In short, anything that causes us to feel stressed can make us more susceptible to getting sick.
How can we strengthen our immune systems?
First we can work on managing our stress better, after that we can take steps to build our bodies up so that they can better deal with stress and we can support our immune system. Naturopathic medicine uses botanical (herbal) medicine, nutrition, nutritional supplements and homeopathics to help support the body through cold and flu season.
Herbals such as Echinacea and Goldenseal may come to mind, but there are also many others like the larch tree sugar called arabinogalactan that work to bolster white blood cell function, medicinal mushrooms, Astragalus, garlic and ginger are also fantastic.
Nutritionally, our bodies perform best when we follow a diet that is low in sugar and prepackaged foods, dairy products are very mucous producing and may need to be avoided when you are congested. Our office offers homeopathic immune booster treatments that are safe for everyone in the family to have. The homeopathics have actually been shown to improve natural killer cell activity by 40% with just one treatment. Nutritional supplements are also important, Zinc, Vitamin C and probiotics are all important for enhancing immune health.
Perhaps it is too late and you’re already dealing with a nasty bug, then you may want to try a few of these great home remedies to get you back on your feet.
Magic Antibiotic Tea
3 cups water
2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger root
1 lemon, squeezed fresh juice
2 cloves crushed garlic or as much as you can tolerate
2 teaspoons honey or to taste
Add all ingredients to a pot, cover and allow to simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Drink throughout the day, make more as needed. Garlic will turn bluish when mixed with lemon but it is still safe to eat.
Wet Warming Sock Treatment
Indications: Sore throat or any inflammation or infection of the throat, neck pain, ear infections, headaches, migraines, nasal congestion, upper respiratory infections, coughs, bronchitis, and sinus infections. The wet sock treatment is best if repeated for three nights in a row, or as instructed by your physician.
Contraindications: Use with caution in diabetes, Raynaud’s phenomenon or syndrome, arterial insufficiency or advanced intermittent claudication. The warming phase is especially important for these patients. Please consult your physician.
Supplies
• 1 pair cotton socks
• 1 pair thick wool socks
• Towel
• Warm bath or warm foot bath
Directions
• Take a pair of cotton socks and soak them completely with cold water. Be sure to wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip.
• Warm your feet first. This is very important as the treatment will not be as effective and could be harmful if your feet are not warmed first. Soaking your feet in warm water for at least 5-10 minutes or taking a warm bath for 5-10 minutes can accomplish warming.
• Dry off feet and body with a dry towel.
• Place cold wet socks on feet. Cover with thick wool socks. Go directly to bed. Avoid getting chilled.
• Keep the socks on overnight. You will find that the wet cotton socks will be dry in the morning.
Effects of the Wet Sock Treatment
This treatment acts to reflexively increase the circulation and decrease congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a sedating action and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections.
If you are sick, try to follow these guidelines:
- Avoid all sugar, dairy and wheat to decrease mucous and reduce the consumption of heavy foods like red meat, your body needs to focus on healing not digesting.
- Don’t smoke
- Take time off to rest and heal
- Take in plenty of fluids, vegetable juice and chicken broth
- Take Epsom salt baths (2 cups per bath) to open pores and reduce body aches
- Wear lots of clothing layers to encourage sweating, wear a scarf and a hat
- Use a vaporizer; mucous can collect at night if the air is too dry

Make a Difference Day
October 22 is Make a Difference Day. Often when we think about making a difference our thoughts go to things we could or should be doing for others to help out and make a difference in their lives. This is a noble cause and of course more than worth considering. But I’d like to propose another possible approach on this day. What can you change or shift within your own life, within yourself as a person that would make a difference in YOUR life? Some very small shifts can make a very big difference and the beautiful part is that it will not only affect your life but others around you.
How can you make a difference in the world by choosing to live your life a little differently, to think or act a little differently? If every person strove to make some small personal changes in the way they think and live it could add up to a huge difference to the world as a whole. Being a happier, healthier more relaxed person not only benefits you but the world as a whole.
So on October 22 what will you do for yourself to make a difference in our world?

Is your closet Sabotaging you?
Are you holding onto old cloths as motivation to lose weight?
You know you have that pair of jeans or that little black dress lurking in your closet, just waiting for the day when victorious you will be able to dawn it again and know that you have arrived!
Let’s face it a lot of people have more cloths that are too small in their closets than ones that fit!
This is a big mistake. How on earth is this approach motivating? Every day when you open your closet to get dressed for your day you have hangers full of judgement staring you in the face.
How do you feel in that moment? Empowered, excited about the future, self-confident? Not likely. My guess is the exact opposite.
The idea is that the site of these cloths motivates you by making you think how good you will feel WHEN you can fit them again. To remind you to stay on the straight and narrow so you can fit those old jeans and feel successful.
However, more times than not, what happens when you look at that closet full of old “skinny cloths”?
- You feel defeated.
- You are reminded of everything you ARE NOT.
- You feel like a failure for not reaching that goal yet or having allowed the weight gain to happen in the first place.
- You start beating yourself up, get nice and deep into negative self-talk and feel self-conscious and crappy all day.
Sound at all familiar?
Is this really the kind of energy and focus that are going to bring about real, long term success and happiness? Is this the energy you want to bring to your life every day?
Stop allowing your closet to sabotage you! Get rid of all those old “Skinny, some day” cloths and the negative energy that comes with them. What a great reason to go shopping! Find some cloths that fit you and make you feel good NOW. As you reach your goals and your body continues to change you go again!
This is moving FORWARD rather than backward with your life. Forward is the only direction we can actually move and it builds momentum and motivation that feeds itself. You can stay STUCK in the past but you cannot go back there, you cannot re-create it, you cannot live it again so it is time to let it go and move toward the future with a confident, self-empowered stride.
Imperfect is Perfect

A few years ago I was presenting a nutrition seminar to a packed room at a company downtown. Just as I was about to begin speaking, a tall lanky guy barged in the room and strut confidently to the front of the room and sat down directly in front of me. With a smirk on his face he pulled out a bag and proceeded to chow down on a greasy fast food combo meal. There were a few gasps and looks of surprise on some of the other participant's faces. As I began my session I could see that the "wise guy" was annoyed that I did not react to his lunch choice. Towards the end of my session I highlighted something that surprised the group...
I told them that when it comes to nutrition, imperfect is perfect. I explained that you could eat a greasy fast food combo meal in front of me and that I would not react. The reason being, there are no good and bad foods, only good and bad diets as a whole.
The concept of imperfect eating may be tough to wrap your head around since many of us have been taught to strive for excellence and that anything less is a pathetic effort The diet industry and even some of my colleagues in the health and wellness industry provide lists that highlight "super foods" you should eat and bold lists of evil foods you should never eat.
Remember that trying to follow a regimented inflexible diet will only set you up to fail. It compromises the principle that we all want what we can't have. Trying to remove your favourite foods will only lead to overdoing them and feelings of failure for not sticking to your perfect eating regime. One of my favorite comics I have seen in the newspaper was a caption of a bakery truck that had been raided by a mob of frantic Atkins dieters.
What have you tried to remove from your diet that made you feel like a failure when you couldn't stick to it? Can you find a middle ground in between ALL or NONE?

Exercise Adherence Part 1:
Contributed by Tricia Kawahara. Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Exercise is good for you!
This is not a revelation for anyone, but it does raise the question:
If exercise is so good for us, and everyone knows it, why don’t we exercise more regularly?
Over the past seven years, and thousands of personal training sessions, I have come to realize that there are two common answers to this question. First, people feel like they don’t have time to exercise on a regular basis. Secondly, they become bored with doing the same routine day after day.
At inspiration Training our philosophy is based on a client education process that begins with establishing a daily routine to include exercise. In part one of this two part series I will describe my top 5 teaching points to help my clients overcome the barrier of time availability.
1. Schedule a meeting with yourself
When was the last time you decided not to attend a meeting at work? Or the last time you opted not to drive your child to their sporting event? For most people, the items that are scheduled are always completed. This is why I encourage all of my clients to schedule “exercise meetings” with themselves and treat it just like they would any other appointment.
2. Commit to partner or group training
Similar to scheduling an “exercise meeting”, committing to an exercise group or scheduling weekly fitness sessions with a friend provides motivation and helps to ensure dedication. I encourage my clients to sign up for group training sessions as they are typically scheduled on the same day of the week and at the same time of day. They then become appointments that you learn to plan around.
3. Avoid the all or nothing philosophy
Exercise is good for you…what many people do not understand is that any amount of exercise is good for you. How many times have you begun an exercise program only to quit after realizing your schedule could not handle your best intentions? Beginning an exercise program is a lifestyle change and it is important to resist the temptation to add too much too quickly. Start by scheduling 15-minute workouts into your day. In many cases you will see better results then scheduling 5 hour-long workouts per week that you only adhere to one time. Have trust that later on you will find the time and energy for ½ hour-long workouts and look forward to completing them.
4. Workout early in the day
As the day goes on the more excuses you will find not to workout!
5. Combine Activities
Workout during commercials; make family time active time; walk your kids to school or walk to work. Most people. Think they need more hours in a day to fit a workout in. What they really need is to incorporate exercise into their regular activities of daily living.

Self-Awareness
Did you know that September is Self-awareness month?
Really we need to be practicing self-awareness more than just one month out of the year! (Just like we should be showing our partners we love them a lot more than just on Feb 14th and practicing peace and good will to all 'people' more often than just Christmas time.)
But, having a month dedicated to self-awareness could certainly serve as a jumping off point for a larger commitment.
Why do we want to be Self-Aware in the first place?
- Being self-aware helps improve self-esteem. In other words you feel better about yourself and who you are.
- Being self-aware means we are able to observe our action and interactions and understand the role we play within our relationships.
- Improved relationships
- Being self-aware makes it easier to make sound decisions (not based on emotion)
- Being self-aware gives us greater self-control
- It reduces stress levels significantly
- It allows us to be more creative
- It allows for more compassion for others as well as for yourself.
All pretty good reasons to give this self-awareness thing a try! Why not take September as your jumping off point. Make a commitment to spend some time this month getting to know yourself and I'm willing to bet you won't want to stop.
What can you do as of today to take your first step to knowing YOU more intimately?
Write it down and practice it everyday this month. Be sure to take notice of the changes you notice along the way.

Feature Article
The Judge
Last weekend my husband and I popped out to our neighborhood pub to enjoy a bite to eat on the patio and soak in some of the hot weather. During our conversation my husband brought to my attention something that I really didn’t want to see.
He, not so subtly, pointed out that I have been doing a lot of judging lately. Of course what I really wanted to do was get mad at him and defend myself, how dare he call ME judgmental!! However, after my initial shock and having talked myself out of pouting, I knew what he was saying was an opportunity for me. Interestingly the issue of judgment has been coming up a lot for my clients lately in our sessions and of course it has also been an invitation for me to explore it further in my own life. I guess I missed a couple of clues and so got hit over the head with one I couldn’t ignore!!
I am thankful for this important reminder about the way I want to be living my life and to practice what I preach! A great sign to bring back into my daily practices all the things I talk about with clients everyday!
Why is it important to work on releasing judgment?
- "Judgment is preventing you from seeing things as they actually are and mobilizing your true potential”
-Jon Kabat-Zinn
Judgment is very simply your own perception of events from your own personal and narrow perspective. What we judge a situation to be depends on who we are, it is completely relative. It depends on our past conditioning, upbringing, values, religious beliefs, political ideals, prejudices and even our mood that day or moment. They are our own distorted views of the facts as we see them through our personal, individual lenses**.Can you see how this could cause problems in your life if left unchecked?
We are always judging our experiences and what is going on around us...it is human nature to label things. We see something as good, enjoyable or conversely bad and distasteful. It is not the actual labeling or judging that is the problem but how caught up in and attached you become with your judgments.
When you are caught up and unaware of your judging it really clouds your vision. It keeps you from truly experiencing life; it keeps you stuck in the patterns you are in. Being able to witness the judge in action allows us to see how it is influencing our experience and gives us the opportunity to step back from its grasp.
Become more mindful of your inner judge. Watch him or her at work and take notice of the effects on you and others around you. How much energy are you wasting judging situations and complaining about them instead of working to creatively change them? How many arguments could you avoid by stepping back from your judge? What old hurts or grudges could you let go of if you were able to use a different perspective?
How will your life be changed by letting go of the constant judging?

Undoing Perpetual Stress by Richard O’Connor
I am still working my way through this fascinating book about the damaging effects of our modern day life and what we can do about it. He gives practical, mindfulness based advice on overcoming stress, anxiety and depression. This combines really well with the scientific information he gives on how these practices actually work in the brain and body. I find this especially appealing as I always like to know “how” things work!

Weight Loss
Are you doomed before you've even begun?
“Whether you think you can or you can’t, either way you’re right”
- Henry Ford
How is this little word "cant" showing up in your attempts to release weight? This is a tricky question. You might think you are 100% committed to the process and your goals but pay very careful attention to your self-talk and excuses.
How many road blocks are you throwing in your own way?
Many times I have heard women tell me they want to lose weight, have to lose weight are desperate to lose weight. They know they need to make change and they are ready.
However, in the very next breath they are telling me all the reasons that this is going to be very difficult if not impossible right now.
- "I've got to get this weight off. I can't stand what I see in the mirror everyday and the way other people look at me. I think my kids are embarrassed to be seen with me and I hate the thought of my husband seeing me naked! I just need to lose 50 pounds and I know I will feel better. It is always so hard in my *house because we are so busy all the time with the kids sports. I'm always running around between work and getting them around. I know I need to eat better but don't have time to think about it or prepare lunches. My kids hate vegetables and I can't be preparing two meals all the time. I wonder about starting now because I have so many social events coming up. I have an Elliptical trainer at home but I really hate exercising and when do I have time to do it."
Does any of this sound a little bit familiar? Perhaps you don't have kids but find a million other road blocks to put in your path.
How can we expect success from ourselves if this is our thinking from the get go?
Now, before anyone goes and gets defensive on me....I'm not suggesting that these issues are not real. They are very real and very common without question.
They are also LIMITED THINKING
These issues/excuses are nothing that a little open mindedness and creative thinking can't solve.
- First you have to be able to see and hear yourself making the excuses.
- Then you have to be willing to open up to a different way of doing and seeing things.
Take off the blinders! Stop seeing things as written in stone and look for opportunity. Yes, that means that sometimes you might have to ask for help, delegate or even eliminate some items from your schedule.
OPEN to seeing that you can do things in a different way.
- Do the kids really need to be in so many activities each?
- Is there opportunity for car pooling and sharing with other families?
- The family should be learning to eat healthily as well. You are doing them a favor by introducing a healthier diet
- Is getting some prepared healthy meals an option?
- Is there some activity that you actually LIKE to do?
- Maybe if you had more time you wouldn't hate the thought of exercise so much.
- What household chores can you delegate? How can you get some extra help?
- How about doing active things together as a family instead of one of the kids sport activities?
These are just a few simple ideas based on the excuses above.
If you really do want to make change and lose weight you have to remove the road blocks from your path.
Be aware, Be creative and Be open to the possibility.

The Balance Myth
The idea of balance was intended to make our lives better, to make things easier for us but instead, like so many things we have used it against ourselves. In fact I would say that many people are in fact MOR E stressed out because they are not succeeding at balance and that makes them somehow a failure.
The problem is that most people tend to think of balance as a static state. It is a state or destination they are trying to reach and once they get there, all problems will be solved.(I’ll be happy when... thinking at its finest!) For many of my clients who are striving for balance there is the notion that if they could just GET THERE everything in life would be OK. Once they figure it out, how to do this balance thing, life will be an easy constant state of Zen like bliss. Always calm, peaceful, joyful and fun.
Striving for a balanced life is a worthy goal and yes life can be easier, more peaceful and fun when we operate from a place of equilibrium. However, balance is not a place we reach, not a state that is maintained as a constant. What is balanced and equal for us one week may look very different the next week. That essentially is the real idea of balance.
Let’s look at the human body as a master of equilibrium. Our bodies are designed to keep us in a balanced state, or homeostasis. This is not a static state. Our bodies are constantly adjusting and adapting to changes in the system both big and small, mostly without our awareness that it is even happening. The room gets a couple of degrees hotter and our bodies respond to help keep our temperature at a balanced and optimal state. The room cools down and our bodies go into action again. The only thing that is constant about this process is that the body is always adapting and changing what it needs to in order to maintain homeostasis.
This is what balance is all about. It is the art of adapting that is vital to achieve true balance.
(It needs to be said that the perpetual stress of modern day living has greatly undermined the bodies’ ability to adapt and as such we are seeing more disease and illness. A crucial reminder that we do need discover the art of true balanced living).
When we approach it this way, balance is more about a state of mind than anything else. Life is always going to shift and change and the more we can stay flexible and adaptable the more “balanced” we will feel, the easier life will be. It is not that we don’t need to prioritize and make choices about the use of our time. We need to do this while keeping in mind that things are always changing and balance is always a work in progress. Just being able to relax about the whole process makes life easier!
I like to use the analogy of the waves on the ocean. The saying goes that “you can’t stop the waves but you can learn how to surf”. This is balance. The waves will always keep coming. They will be different some big, some small, some with undercurrent, some that are mere ripples on the waters. As you get up on that surf board and learn how to ride those waves it gets easier and easier to adapt to the changes, to ride them out and come out on top for the next round. Riding becomes second nature and instead of fighting you are relaxed and easy, life is fun!
Weight loss
Dealing with pressure to eat.
This is a concern that many of my clients and workshop participants struggle with. There are always those people, be they family, friends or co-workers who will pressure you to eat because everyone else is. You go to a birthday party and don’t want to have cake. You politely decline but people begin pressuring you and you end up giving in, feeling helpless, mad at yourself and frustrated with the other people for not being supportive.
What to do in these situations?
First of all make sure you are not just using this pressure from others as an excuse for your own decisions and actions. Next is to treat it as you would any other peer pressure situation. Just because it is food doesn’t make it any more acceptable for someone to push it on you than it would if it were drugs. Your response should be just as firm. Sure it seems harmless enough to those who push and to you who gives in but is it really?
So let’s say you go to a party where everyone’s trying heroine and they passed you a needle. What do you do?
Refuse.
Then the pressure begins; “oh come on everyone is having some, just a little bit wont’ hurt you, what are you worried about?”Are you going to give in and say, “Ok just a small bit”, like you would with the birthday cake?
Not likely, but yet it is essentially the same thing. Perhaps the consequences of the heroine are more severe but the cake is not harmless in this situation. It holds consequences for you both physical and mental emotional. If you have decided that you are not going to do something for the good of your own health then don’t allow peer pressure to trip you up. Think of food pushers as drug pushers to you and feel as strong in your commitment and stance as you would if it were indeed something much more serious than a piece of cake.

Cravings
Four o'clock in the afternoon is notorious craving time As the workday comes to an end, many of us scramble down the corridor to the vending machine. So just what exactly are these cravings and can we do something about them?
Cravings can be caused by numerous factors, including stress, psychological and physical dependencies , mineral deficiencies and blood sugar irregularities.
The first step to alleviate the cravings is to avoid the "trigger" foods that can cause the cravings such as highly processed foods; for example sweet biscuits and chocolate.
Cravings can also be due to blood sugar levels dropping. When blood sugar levels drop your brain sends signal to your body indicating that you need sugar and the you need it fast, hence the craving. This can often leave you feeling irritable and tired.
To avoid Cravings
- Drink at least 2 liters of filtered water per day
- Learn to determine weather your cravings are due to the fact that you are bored or upset. If this is so, practice self-discipline and focus your attention on something else for 10 to 15 minutes. Going for a walk or playing with your pet is always a good idea as well as calling a friend or doing some gardening.
- Look into a program such as Sure Slim that is designed to help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce the occurrence of cravings.

How can you keep your commitment to yourself and your goals strong over the long run?
Goals need to be more specific and present focused than they generally tend to be. Here is a common scenario when setting weight release goals.
Goal: Lose 10 pounds
Goal: Exercise at least 3 times per week
Goal: Eat a healthier diet
Look familiar?
Lets face it, this method is just not going to keep you focused, motivated and committed over time. I'd bet you've probably already experienced this more than once!
Instead you need to make your goals current, focused and real each week. This serves the added purpose of breaking down a larger goal into smaller pieces, therefore making it more approachable and more effective.
What to do? Sit down each week and commit to specific goals.
Goal: Walk with Bonnie on Monday and Friday night after work
Goal: Pack a healthy nutritious lunch for work 3 time this week.
Goal: Get to bed early so I am rested and have energy for my exercise
Goal: Do strength training on Tuesday and Saturday morning
Goal: Take the stairs all week instead of the elevator.
Can you see how different this feels? It is specific as to the actions you will take and when, it is measurable and attainable. Isn't this more motivating each week than the general and easily forgotten goals above?
We can only live our lives day to day and so our goals should play out on a day to day basis as well.
Want to take this one step further?
Go out and get yourself some fun kids stickers. Every time you carry out a goal give yourself a sticker !! May sound childish and silly but it works! It is fun and rewarding to see the pages filling up with bright colours that show your progress and achievements.
Have fun and enjoy all the new successes!

If you enjoy the endless struggle of weight loss and gain you don't need to read this.
Imagine, not worrying about your weight all the time.
If you are like the majority of women out there you are frustrated by losing weight only to gain it all back and more and you may feel like giving up on ever losing weight. I am willing to bet you have spent a lot of time, energy and especially money in your battle with your body and you are getting pretty fed up with it all. You are tired of worrying about your weight all the time, sick of judging and criticizing yourself and feeling like a failure is getting really old. It doesn't seem fair that being lean and healthy seems so natural for some people while you struggle away with this endless struggle of weight loss and gain.
I know because I've been there.
Diet and exercise alone are not enough. The missing piece is your mind and this is the most essential element. It is what is going on inside your own head that keeps getting in the way of success. This is what keeps you from implementing all the other stuff you already know.
It is your thoughts and beliefs that keep you stuck exactly where you are or make sure that you end up back there without fail.
It absolutely has to start in your head. If you are not in the right frame of mind, no program on earth will help you release weight for life! It is time to get your head in the game. The simple truth is this; you can know everything there is to know about diet, nutrition and exercise and try every program available on the market, but without working on your inner program you will never release weight permanently. If you have ever lost weight only to find it again then you have experienced this powerful program first hand!
The good news is that you can actually reset your inner weight program to achieve success naturally without all the struggle and release the weight for life.
This is not some pie in the sky scheme or fad. This is not a miracle cure or quick fix but a program designed to help you conquer your inner weight program and to use your mind for success rather than sabotage.

Perpetually Positive?
Is all this positive thinking really good for us?
I talk a lot about the power of our minds to shape and create our experience. Much of my work focuses on helping people to become aware of their negative thinking patterns and train their brains toward more positive affirming thinking. I very much believe that what we focus our energy on expands in our lives but there is a fine line when it comes to positive thinking. We can go to far embracing the positive and rejecting the negative.
For one thing, we cannot have the positive without the negative. It is the Yin and Yang of it. How would you know what happy felt like if we had nothing like sorrow to compare it with? This dichotomy in life is natural and necessary and we need not fight against it. Being in a perpetually positive state is false and not natural.
Many clients of mine really struggled with this after watching the movie The Secret. They were worried and afraid of what might happen if they allowed themselves to feel or think about the negative. They tried really hard to deny and push away anything remotely negative and to be only positive. Only think and feel positive. The problem is this is not natural and invites struggle back into our lives. Focusing on the positive while fearfully repressing any other thoughts and emotions is in itself negative. The power of the positive lies not in being a perpetual Pollyanna, but in allowing for the natural ebb and flow of life.
I've long been working with people to help them find the natural balance where this flow is possible. Helping them to see the difference between being focused and stuck in the negative and allowing ourselves to see and feel it so we can let it go. We all know what happens when we keep pushing something down and not expressing it. It begins to fester and grow and becomes a much bigger deal than it would have been in the first place.
In his book Power Freedom and Grace Dr Deepak Chopra makes an interesting point about the positive and negative mind. Both are prone being turbulent and are really only our interpretations of reality. What is more important and more natural than having a positive mind is a silent one.
Turning off this mind struggle between positive and negative and just being. It is in silence that we get in touch with our true nature our true selves. This silence I believe is about trust. Trusting that we can let go of the control. There will always be ups and downs in life. Always be good and bad, happiness and sadness, joy and torment. It is a fact of life that cannot be changed no matter how much positive thinking we do. The trick is not to get stuck in either the ups or the downs but to "go with the flow"
There is an excerpt from the Power Freedom and Grace book that I would like to share here that really sums all of this up very nicely.
There is a saying that goes, "The river of life runs between the banks of pleasure and pain, and one bumps into both". That is not the problem. The problem occurs when we cling to the banks, either the positive one or the negative one. When we quietly reconcile ourselves to all the contradictions that life offers, when we can comfortably flow between the banks of pleasure and pain, experiencing them both while getting stuck in neither, then we have achieved freedom.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about their true nature and how to live a happier life.
I would also love to hear your questions about positive thinking and the Laws of Attraction. I will use some of these questions and their answers in up coming newsletters and tele-seminars. Please write me at mailto:info@inspiritulife.com
If you find you are having a hard time "going with the flow" in your life and tend to get stuck on either bank of the river, please give me a call. Coaching could be just what you need to get moving in the direction you desire.

Beautiful Flaws
I've just read a lovely article from MSN and wanted to share it with my readers. I love that the idea of embracing and loving our flaws is catching on! Learn to Love your Body
I would invite you to take this idea one step further still. Think about the GIFT in your flaws. What has that flaw brought into your life that you would not have otherwise? How has it enriched your life? How has it allowed you to grow or learn? How has it inspired you?
In my own life I struggled many, many years with hating my own thighs. I now acknowledge and am very grateful for these thighs. Not only because without them life would be pretty difficult but because they have allowed me to overcome my insecurity. This "flaw" has allowed me to grow and to become who I am today. Because of my journey with my thighs I have developed great compassion for others with body insecurities and a deep respect for ALL body sizes and shapes. It has caused me to look at my body and create a loving respect for everything it is and does. Something I may never have done if I had been brorn "perfect'. My own experience with my body has also lead me into one of the important aspect of my work which I absolutely love. I am inspired and passionate about helping women feel comfortable and happy in their own bodies.
Thats really a lot of gits from one "flaw"! Give this exercise a try I know you will find that thinking about it in this way puts a whole new frame on what you see as a "flaw".

Heartfull Holidays
This season can be so challenging and it is easy to get caught up in the stress. I just read another wonderful newsletter form the Chopra center and one particular line really stood out to me in light of the Holiday Season.
"Keep wealth circulating through life's most precious gifts: caring, affection, appreciation and love. Each time you meet someone, silently wish them happiness."
This is so true, isn't it? Without these things what would life be? How can you practice this in your life this season? Maybe it is giving a smile and sending wishes of happiness to the other frustrated shoppers in the mall parking lot. Maybe it is giving a compliment or extra show of thanks to the busy shop attendant. How can you give more love, appreciation, affection and caring? I invite you to give it a try and see what can happen, how it feels and how it resounds in your own life.
I'm confident you will have the best holiday season ever!
I highly encourage you to read Deepak Chopra's article in full and here is the link:

TRAPPED
I often hear my clients use one very powerful word or expression without being aware of its power and effect on their lives. Even I allow it to slip into my vocabulary now and then and am very grateful for the reminder to be more mindful.
What is this powerful word?
Can't or I Can't
A very small word or phrase that packs a whollop of a punch!
Think about it honestly for a moment, how often does this word or phrase find its way into your language?
If you think and believe you can't then guess what, you are absolutely right. If you say, "I can't " you are 100% correct, you can't. If you believe that things can't change then you are right on the money, they can't and won't change. Nothing will ever change, nothing can possibly change if you are thinking can't. In this mindset, with this energy you are totally closed to any other options and are indeed stuck exactly where you are.
"Whether you think you can or think you cannot either way, you are right."
-Henry Ford
You have probably heard that quote before but have you really thought about how it applies to you? In what ways are you limiting yourself with these words?
Maybe its not I can't but something similar. Take a moment and see if any of these phrases sound familiar.
- It's just not possible.
- Nothing is going to change. He/She is never going to change. It can't change
- It just has to be this way right now.
- There is no other way.
- This is just the way things are.
These thoughts and beliefs are keeping you exactly where you DON'T want to be. Start paying more attention to how you think and speak. You might be surprised to find out how often you are limiting yourself.
If you don't like where you are the first thing you need to do is stop with the CAN'T and open to possibility. Open your mind and your heart simply to the possibility that something could be different. Allow for possibility to exist. The more you open the more you will be able to see possibility in your life. The more you will be able to see, think of and act on different options that will take you toward what you do want in your life. Allowing for possibility means you are open and willing to see and change, if that is what you truly desire.
Special Offer
Head start program
The New Year is just around the corner and so are all those resolutions! Many of us see the New Year as an opportunity for new beginnings yet very few people actually manage to accomplish any of their new goals. Celebrate Life
I wanted to share a link to an article in the Calgary Herald about a very inspiring young woman. It is a great reminder to appreciate the precious gift of life. A reminder to be brave, be honest, be our true authentic selves; to surround ourselves with people we love and who love us back and to meet life head on. We only get one chance at this life, don't waste another minute of it. Embrace your life and LIVE it. Take a moment to reflect on all the gifts you have in your life. Notice all the things you have to be grateful for everyday, big and small. Write them down and keep adding to them as you see and think of more things. This is a great exercise to help reveal all the beautiful things that are already a part of your life right now. Finally, what can you do today to start living your life more fully, more completely?
Live life to the fullest

Weight Loss Inside Out
I just read a very interesting article about a new weight loss product on the market. I'd have to say, this one is a strange one. It is called the Charlie Bite and is being promoted as a safer alternative to gastric bypass surgery. Apparently it is a device that is cemented onto your molars by a dentist and forces you to chew and swallow more slowly. The idea is that by slowing down people will eat less and therefore loose weight. However, this is not a permanent device and so I ask the question (one of many); what happens when the device comes out? Seems to me that it would be like any other "Diet" that you go on and off of. Unless you LEARN for yourself to be more conscious of how much you are eating and your bodies own satiety signals, my guess would be that the old habits will return along with the weight. Isn't it time that we started looking inside ourselves for the solutions and answers to our weight issues? Millions of people loose weight only to gain it back again year after year and the diet industry is going stronger than ever!
Here is a question to illustrate what I mean: Do you define yourself as a fat, unhealthy person? Is this how you see and think of yourself?
Did you answer yes?
How can you expect to make permanent change if this is your self-definition? I'm sure you are familiar with the idea of the self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe yourself to be unfit and unhealthy then no matter what you try to do on the outside, lasting change will elude you. Yes, exercising and eating healthy are necessary, but unless you change the underlying belief, it is like putting a new coat of paint on a structurally damaged house. It might help on the surface but eventually the house will crumble. Many people can identify with this situation. You loose your weight but really, inside you STILL think of yourself as a fat person. You are not a healthy eating, healthy lifestyle person, you are a fat person masquerading as a thin one and you have to be vigilant to stay that way. This underlying belief will defeat you. The only way to beat it is to do the work on your inside self. Work on changing your self-defeating beliefs and patterns so that your structure, your foundation, is strong and will support you. Reprogram your brain and instead of seeing yourself as a fat person trying to get or stay thin, start thinking of yourself as a healthy person who is becoming fitter and healthier everyday.
"I'm healthy and fit" OR "I'm in the process of becoming healthy and fit"
Self-definition is just one of the many aspects of the internal solutions for permanent weight loss. Stay tuned for more ideas and inspiration on building your healthy foundation.

Body Image
Though it is far to late at night for me to be working I had to post this right away. I found a site that does a fabulous job of showing exactly how fake the fashion mag photos really are. I think this is a must see for any woman! Or even any man who believes the models are real! Like me you probably already know that the photos are altered but this really amazed me. It is a great thing this site is doing by so clearly showing us that we must question what we see and compare ourselves to everyday. Let this image empower you with the realization that even models look like NORMAL people in REAL life!
Check it out and let me know what you think.

Self-Help
Highly Recommended Reading
Self-help and Self-improvement books and resources are abundant and sometimes knowing what to choose can be pretty confusing. In my coaching practice I recommend reading to help my clients further their process and learning. By sharing some of these recommendations in my newsletter, I hope to help you find great resources that can be of service to you. Of course, my recommendations are based on my own opinions and preferences but reading my reviews should help you decide what's up your ally before you buy out the bookstore! I know I love it when someone turns me onto a great book or resource so if anyone has recommendations for me I would love to receive them.
My recommendation for this month is "Quantum Success" by Author Sandra Anne Taylor.
If you were interested in what you saw or read in "The Secret" I strongly recommend that you read this book. It is based on the principals of attraction but goes into much more detail and explanation of the law and those related to it. Sandra Anne Taylor is a counselor and has been using the principles of energy and consciousness with her clients for 20 years. One of the reasons I love this book is that it gets into some of the science behind these principles while still being very readable for the non-scientist. The other reason is that it gives us more information on how to truly work with these principles in creating our lives. It is not quite as simple as it appears in The Secret. There are many different laws around the law of attraction and this book lays them out very clearly. She writes in detail about 7 universal laws of success, 6 personal powers of success and 5 magnetic energies of success. It is an interesting read and for those seeking more information and in depth understanding of the theory of the law of attraction this is a great resource. It has plenty of exercises and affirmations to help the reader really apply the principles in its pages.
I bought my copy at amazon.com and am not sure if it is now available at Chapters or Indigo. Visit my Blog page and let me know what you think I would love to hear your comments and feedback about this book.

Are you Thinking Stressfully?
Many psychological theories are based on the premise that our thoughts and beliefs determine how we feel. It is common sense that a person who is generally pessimistic in attitude will have a different, more stressful and negative experience than one who is more optimistic and positive. It always amazes me however, how many of us have no idea how we are contributing to our own experience. I invite you to contemplate this idea for a moment. Pay attention to your thinking, your beliefs and assumptions and how they influence your stress or well-being.
What do you notice about your thinking patterns? Are you predominately negative or positive in your outlook? Do you tend to get caught up in the negative story, stuck in everything that went wrong, worrying, blaming or playing the situations over and over again? This type of thinking significantly increases your feelings of stress.
Before you get into worrying and stressing about how your thinking patterns are making you miserable, let me share the good news! YOU have the power to change your thinking and as a result, the experiences you have in life. This about making a choice. Present belief patterns are the result of past learning and you most certainly have the ability to learn a different more beneficial pattern!
How do I get started?
- Be an observer of your thoughts - Catch yourself engaging in negative thinking and worry.
- Interrupt the automatic cycle- DECIDE to stop. Don't allow your mind to run away with these thoughts.
- Distract yourself - Shift your focus or attention to something neutral. A sound in the background, music, people watching. The key here is to interrupt the cycle before you get caught up in it.
- Revamp your thought - Start replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Call it what you will, affirmation or cognitive rehearsal, this is a very effective way of shifting your thinking and changing how you feel. Studies show that with practice they can actually create new neural pathways in the brain! You are training your brain and creating the hardware at the same time.
- Be curious - How can you learn from your experience? Often the most difficult experiences offer your biggest opportunity to learn about yourself, grow and over come obstacles that seem to constantly reappear.
- Ask for help - You don't have to do this alone. I have helped many people make these changes and live happier more peaceful lives. Check out the pages on Transforming Stress.
